Introduction: Digital Security and Privacy for Youngsters

Information and Communication Technology (ICT) is considered a vital component for youngsters' interaction to explore different knowledge, various sciences and building human relations, it is also a fundamental space for expression and communication. New generations' ability always excels to build familiarity and routine in using and employing comfortably various tools and areas of information technology and help them become independent and build the accumulation of diverse knowledge.

Due to the continuous development of information technology space in different aspects of life, the telecommunications users in general, and youngsters (ranging from 12 to 15 years old) in particular, face various challenges and problems because of the lack of understanding of how that space works, the consequences of sharing personal data in different forms and the assumptions made by the youngsters that are incorrect most of the time.

Arab Digital Expression Foundation (ADEF) seeks to help young people -through brainstorming and workshop sessions- to better understand how the internet, mobile phones and various applications, social media sites and search engines work, in a way that helps boys and girls make their decision not only, independently and effectively but also prospect the various problems which they might be exposed to, such as; extortion, mockery, technical breakthroughs, impersonation, the misuse of the pictures and much more of other challenges that may affect negatively on youngsters, especially with the lack of awareness about possible solutions, ranging from better understanding of technology, precautionary and technical procedures for security, building confidence and friendship with the parents for advice and ask for help without fear or hesitation.

As a result of the wide expansion in the use of technology as well as its reliability, its negative impacts increase, sometimes due to personal malpractice or users lack of awareness about the importance of and ways to secure their data, making it easier for hackers to penetrate and access individuals' computers, mobile phones and personal data and misuse it. The problem becomes more critical and sensitive when it comes to teenagers' privacy; because of the complete reliability of the new generations on technology in all aspects of their lives, given their lack of information about its dangers, in addition to the unawareness of the importance of privacy and security against others; whether strangers or even friends.

Throughout the workshops, ADEF explains to youngsters the concept of "Privacy" and the ability to control their personal data in a simple and smooth method. The workshop also provides a detailed presentation on how the networks and social networking sites function; defines "Usage and Privacy Policies" concept that controls the relationship between all types of telecommunications users and telecommunications service providers, data journey through computers highlighting the various problems that may occur and finally, discuss various correct and incorrect practices that may increase or avoid the chances of the occurrence of the problem.

It is worth mentioning that the content of all sessions is considered preliminary information on the privacy and digital security concepts to raise basic knowledge with the objective to develop a plan for further in-depth sessions that grow gradually in term of topics to enhance youngsters' knowledge and skills for better understanding of the techniques that would help them to maintain their privacy, safety and to interact with the technology freely and without restrictions.
